What is Moxa?

Moxa is the therapeutic practice of burning dried mugwort along specific acupuncture points and along the meridian system of the body in East Asian medicine.

Mugwort is warm in nature, acrid and aromatic. In that sense, moxibustion in particular moxa and fire has an ability to disperse cold and alleviate pain, and can dredge the channels of dampness eliminating excess yin. It’s activating qualities open the flow of qi and blood in the channels, warming the yang and promoting circulation throughout the entire system.

Meridian systems communicate with the internal organs as pathways for communication and distribution of qi, blood and vital substances. Moxa is another mechanism similar to acupuncture that promotes the body’s innate ability to self regulate and heal itself.

Moxa is a simple yet powerful therapy. It has a tonifying effect on the tissues and channels-making it a wonderful ally for those with deficiency and cold. It can also treat conditions in excess, and its warming nature is a perfect therapy to integrate for the colder months.
