How often should you see your acupuncturist?

This is a common question that I’m asked as an acupuncturist, especially from new patients. So I wanted to share with you some information that may be helpful if you’re thinking about seeing an acupuncturist.
The reality is, the answer is not quite black and white. Treatment depends on a case to case basis, but there are some similarities. Generally for new patients, I recommend seeing an acupuncturist for at least 8-10 visits, and then assessing from there.
In the beginning, I recommend coming in 1-2x week for the first 4-8 weeks, especially for acute issues related to injuries, trauma, emotional support or for chronic health issues. Once issues have subsided or progress in the treatments become visible, visits can be focused on maintenance. Patients may then come in every other week and eventually visits can be reduced to once a month.
Treatments may vary when it comes to women’s health. For menstrual and hormonal balance, I like to see my patients for at least 3 of their menstrual cycles. Folks trying to conceive naturally or planning IVF treatments, I like them to come in for at least 3-6 months in order to prepare for conception. For folks going through IVF, I’d like to see you throughout the duration of your treatments up until conception. For expecting mamas without any complications, I like to see them 1x a month. Once they hit 28-35 weeks: every other week. Week 35-40 every week. Week 38-40+ up to 3x per week. For my postpartum mamas, I like to see 1-3 times a week for the first 6 weeks postpartum, and then every week until needed.
Most importantly, consistency is important so that we can build off each treatment. In my experience, consistent visits get better results long term.
I hope this helps!
